Organising a company party in Amsterdam: how to approach it
Amsterdam has venues you will not find anywhere else: churches, canal houses, museums, beach clubs and old factory halls. At the same time, the city is busy, expensive and full of rules. These points will help you avoid most surprises.
1. Choose your date wisely
December is the busiest month for company parties: venues, DJs and caterers get booked up quickly. The city is also packed around King's Day (Koningsdag) and during ADE in October. A party in January, spring or September is often easier to arrange and just as much fun.
2. Choose the type of venue
- Church or monument: impressive, but with strict rules on set-up and sound
- Museum or canal house: atmospheric for dinners and smaller groups
- Beach club or terrace: ideal for a summer party
- Industrial hall, for example in Noord: plenty of space and freedom for large groups
Ask every venue about the minimum spend, what technical equipment is available, the sound limit and the finishing time. These decide how late and how loud your party can be.
3. Permits and rules
At an established event venue, the venue usually already has the permits. If you want something in a public space, such as a street, park or square, you need an event permit from the municipality. Start on that well in time: for larger events it takes months, not weeks.
4. Think about transport
Parking in Amsterdam is expensive and limited. Choose a venue that is easy to reach by public transport, or arrange transport for your guests. Also plan how people will get home at the end of the night.
5. Plan the music as a timeline
Relaxed music as guests arrive and during dinner, a moment for a speech or act, and then a dance floor. Brief your DJ on the group, the favourites and the moments that matter. A good DJ reads the room and does the rest.
